Agis
Industries Empowers ORT Israel Students
The Israeli branch of Agis
Industries, an international pharmaceuticals company, has donated one million
Israeli shekels, about $275,000, to assist students at ORT Israel’s Shoshana
Sapir Comprehensive High School in the southern town of Yerucham where their
plant and R&D facility are located. The contribution is dedicated to
significantly increasing the number of students who major in scientific subjects
by strengthening their skills through a tutorial program in math, English,
physics and science.
ORT Israel’s relationship with the
corporate giant began about five years ago when Agis funded a small program to
encourage outstanding students to bring their science education up to the
academic level. Four biology students were assigned to Agis researchers in the
R&D facility who mentored them. Two of the four are now studying chemistry
at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and will then return to work at Agis upon
completion of their studies.
Over the ensuing years, Agis has increased its
involvement with ORT Yerucham, hosting seminars that include hands-on
experimentation and scientific enrichment. With Agis support, junior high
students participate in “the young researcher” program, conducting advanced
research in various scientific fields under professional supervision. Agis is
also promoting the study of chemistry among outstanding junior high students so
that a full chemistry track can be opened in the high school.
Agis Industries produces ethical
drugs for the Israeli market under long-term exclusive license for some major
multinationals including Bayer AG, Schering AG, Pharmacia Upjohn, Solvay-Duphar,
and others. Agis expertise includes production capabilities for various dosage
forms such as tablets, capsules, semi-solids, aerosols, potent products and
more. Adjacent to the production plant on the same campus is a dedicated R&D
facility with a professional team of more than 40 scientists
Israel Women’s ORT, ORT Sapir and
the Yerucham Municipal Council were instrumental in facilitating the Agis
donation.
